How to Choose Between Custom Software and an Existing Platform
Modernization projects stall at this fork. The answer depends less on technology than on what the organization needs to own.

Four dimensions to weigh
Score each honestly instead of arguing in the abstract.
- Fit — how much of your process the platform models without workarounds.
- Control — whether you can change the system when the business changes.
- Total cost — licences, configuration, integration, and internal workaround labour over five years.
- Exit — how hard it is to leave with your data intact.
Configuration debt is real
Heavily customized platforms often end up costlier than a purpose-built system: you pay for the platform, the consultants who bend it, and the upgrades that break the bending.
Decide per capability, not per organization
Rarely is the correct answer uniform. Buy where you're ordinary. Build where you're distinct. Integrate deliberately in between.
